In Italian merges several themes—culture, religion and relationships. Perhaps exploring his relationship with Italy, Catholic iconography, and supposed rifts between Basquiat and friend and assistant Stephen Torton (drawn as the piece's central blue figure), In Italian remains to this day unclassifiable. By design, Basquiat created this work to remain open to questioning and exploration—exactly what we would expect from the artist, a disruptor ahead of his time.
