“This is not philanthropy, […] it’s rent for us living on the planet.”
- Yvon Chouinard, Founder of Patagonia and Co-founder of 1% for the Planet
Goodee is a proud member of 1% for the Planet. We’re excited to be part of a global network of inspiring companies who are coming together to give back to the Earth.
What is 1% for the Planet?
1% for the Planet is a global movement launched in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. Realizing they had a responsibility to protect the planet, the outdoor-loving entrepreneurs decided to give 1% of their sales back to the environment, whether or not they were profitable.
As they both recognized the power of collective action, they founded 1% for the Planet as a non-profit organization to encourage other businesses to do the same. When joining the movement, businesses also commit to donating 1% of their annual revenue to grassroots environmental nonprofits making a difference on the ground through monetary donations, volunteer time, in-kind donations, or other forms of approved promotional support.
Why is it important to us?
As a Certified B Corp working for social and environmental good, we were determined to deepen our commitment to a more sustainable future, so joining 1% for the Planet made perfect sense. By supporting 1%-for-the-Planet-approved nonprofit partners, we have a unique opportunity to build meaningful relations with grassroots organizations at the forefront of social and environmental justice, and have a greater impact.
What nonprofits do we support?
After reviewing 1% for the-Planet’s list of pre-vetted nonprofits, we’ve identified three environmental organizations with a specific focus on BIPOC communities that we want to support.
We will be donating 1% of our Fiscal Year 2022 proceeds to our nonprofit partners. And the best part is, as our business grows — with your support — so will our impact.
What does it mean for you?
As a conscious consumer, you can have peace of mind knowing that you’re taking action for our planet every time you make a purchase with us. We can’t make meaningful change alone, but together we can make a difference for the Earth*.

People Over Plastic
Launched in 2021, People over Plastic (PoP) is a BIPOC-led media platform focused on the human and social justice side of plastic pollution. The collective brings environmental leaders, activists, journalists, artists, and community members together for solutions-oriented conversations through a podcast and in-person salon events. Their goal? To shift the mainstream narrative on plastic pollution and drive meaningful change “toward an anti-racist, plastic-free future” by amplifying the voices of those most impacted — specifically communities of color all over the world.
Why We Support People over Plastic
PoP puts Black, Indigenous, and people of color working for solutions to the plastic emergency front and center. Their work not only elevates underrepresented voices but also helps paint a more complete picture of the climate crisis, which is crucial to affecting the system-level changes we need.
“We work to amplify and uplift the stories of environmental justice, with a focus on untold and historically excluded narratives. Donations directly allow us to produce transformative media projects such as our podcast docuseries and Story Salons that feature frontline leaders in their stories of resistance.” - Shilpi Chhotray, Co-Founder and Executive Director of People over Plastic

UNISFÉRA
UNISFÉRA is a Canadian not-for-profit organization established in 2002 to promote sustainable development and fight against climate change using a combination of research and advocacy. The organization advises governments, businesses, NGOs, and international organizations, acting as a powerful vector for knowledge-based climate solutions. It also operates Planetair, a carbon offset program offering a range of Gold Standard-certified projects across the globe.
Why We Support UNISFÉRA
UNISFÉRA does critical work right in our own backyard with a far-reaching impact. Their objective in 2023 is to continue to finance climate-friendly and sustainability projects via Planetair, including the significant conservation work undertaken by the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the ground-breaking climate research projects of Montreal’s École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), an eminent engineering school. Planetair will also support international initiatives that raise the bar on the voluntary carbon market to ensure this critical climate protection tool is as effective as possible.
“Contributions from conscientious and inspiring organizations enable Planetair to fulfill its not-for-profit mission to protect the climate and support the transition to a more sustainable economy” - Marc Paquin, CEO of UNISFÉRA/Planetair

Women’s Earth Alliance (WEA)
Women's Earth Alliance (WEA) invests in grassroots women's leadership around the globe to drive solutions to our most pressing environmental concerns — water, food, land rights, and climate. The Berkeley-based non-profit bridges the resource gap for women who are already established as community leaders and empowers them to build self-reliant, environmentally sustainable, healthy communities while connecting them to a global alliance. Their core belief? When women thrive, communities, the environment, and future generations thrive.
Why We Support WEA
WEA's work to strengthen communities and protect our environment is key to creating a more just and sustainable world. Supporting them allows us to support women on the ground who are pushing for change and help spread awareness of the significant role of women's leadership in climate justice — and, more broadly, for a thriving Earth.
“Our promise to women leaders [...] is that by the end of their time in the WEA accelerator, they will have gained the skills, tools, and allies they need to deepen the impact of their work, grow [its] scale, and build more alliances. We can do our best work due to the contributions and support of mission-aligned partners such as Goodee." - Kahea Pacheco, WEA's co-director
