Behind the Maker: The Ripple Collection by Ferm Living

In this edition of Behind the Maker, we explore the Ripple Collection—an elegant series of mouth-blown glassware that reflects the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and global collaboration. Discover the story of how timeless design takes shape, one ripple at a time.
The Ripple Glass Production
Situated to the northeast of Beijing, surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape and built alongside pear plantations, Shanxi Province is the home of Ferm Living's glass casting factory. Built on family values and known for its exquisite techniques, this Chinese factory was the first of its kind to create handmade, high- quality glassware, and has almost 40 years of experience in the field. The Process
Creating the Ripple Series is a delicate dance between artistry and precision—where centuries-old tradition meets quiet mastery. At Ferm Living, each piece of glassware is born from the hands of skilled artisans, with a devotion that honors both the material and the moment. From start to finish, the journey of a single glass can span up to 24 hours, depending on its intricacy.
With the help of a slender blowpipe, each glass is gently mouth-blown into a mould, shaped by the breath of the maker. Slowly, the molten form expands, taking on its signature silhouette as it begins to settle into being. To preserve its graceful shape, the glass is cooled at a carefully controlled temperature. Once cooled, the rim is refined with a precise laser cut, and the edges are softened using a wet, coarse-grit grinding disc. Every ripple is then lovingly cleaned not once, but three times, before a final inspection ensures that only the most refined pieces make their way into your hands. It is a process rooted in patience, guided by touch, and finished with care.
